Dr. Lucas MacMillan offers personalized hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using bioidentical hormones, also known as menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), to help you rebalance and recover. Recognized for multiple years by [ThreeBestRated®](https://threebestrated.ca/naturopathy-clinics-in-north-vancouver-bc) as one of the Top 3 Naturopathic Clinics in North Vancouver Book Now ## When Your Hormones Are Off, Everything Feels Off Fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. Mood swings that seem to come out of nowhere. Weight that won't budge no matter what you try. Brain fog that follows you through the day. If any of this sounds familiar, you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. Hormonal imbalances affect people at every stage of life, not just menopause. Perimenopause, low testosterone, thyroid disruption, and adrenal fatigue can all create the same overwhelming sense that something is wrong, without a clear explanation from a standard blood test. The frustrating part is that many patients spend years being told their labs look "normal", while still feeling anything but. There are different hormone options, and a personalized approach can help you explore what fits your body. ## What Is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy? Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that are molecularly identical to the ones your body naturally produces. Unlike synthetic hormone replacements, bioidentical hormones are derived from plant sources and compounded to an individual prescription. BHRT is used to address imbalances in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol, among others. It's commonly used for menopause and perimenopause, but also supports people dealing with fatigue, mood changes, low libido, and weight management challenges tied to hormonal shifts at any age. ## Personalized BHRT With [Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND](/dr-lucas-macmillan) At Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre, bioidentical hormone therapy starts with a thorough assessment, not a one-size-fits-all prescription. Dr. MacMillan uses hormone testing to review where your levels are, then builds a protocol tailored to your biology, symptoms, and goals. The approach here goes beyond hormones in isolation. As a naturopathic doctor with training in functional medicine, Dr. MacMillan looks at the full picture: thyroid function, adrenal health, nutrition, sleep, and stress, all of which interact with your hormone balance. Comprehensive hormone panel testing, not just standard labs Individualized BHRT protocols using bioidentical compounds Integrated support addressing root-cause drivers of imbalance ## Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Solutions in North Vancouver What to Expect Step 1: Intake Consultation You'll meet with Dr. MacMillan to discuss your symptoms, health history, and goals. Comprehensive hormone and lab testing is ordered at this stage. Step 2: Personalized Protocol Once your results are in, Dr. MacMillan develops your BHRT plan, including hormone type, delivery method, and dosage specific to your needs. Step 3: Ongoing Support Hormone therapy is monitored and adjusted over time. Follow-up appointments track your progress and fine-tune your protocol as your body responds. ## What to Expect from BHRT Responses vary from person to person. Care may aim to support: - More consistent energy, without the afternoon crashes or reliance on caffeine to get through the day - Clearer thinking and steadier mood, with less anxiety, irritability, and mental fatigue - Better sleep and body composition, as hormones that regulate metabolism and recovery come back into range Hormone levels can be related to bone density, cardiovascular health, and long-term health, which is why treatment is monitored with follow-up testing. ## Frequently Asked Questions About Bioidentical Hormone Therapy HRT, MHT, BHRT: what's the difference? They describe the same kind of treatment. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the name most people know. Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is the newer clinical term many medical organizations now use, because menopause is a normal life stage rather than a deficiency. Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) means the hormones used are molecularly identical to the ones your body makes, such as estradiol and progesterone. Dr. MacMillan will walk you through which options fit your situation. How much does bioidentical hormone therapy cost in Canada? Cost varies based on the hormones prescribed, delivery method, and compounding pharmacy. At Delbrook, Dr. MacMillan will review all costs with you at your consultation. Some components of the assessment may be covered by extended health plans, including Pacific Blue Cross, Manulife, and Sun Life. Who is a good candidate for BHRT? BHRT is most commonly used for perimenopause and menopause, but it's also appropriate for people experiencing fatigue, low libido, mood disruption, or weight changes tied to hormonal shifts at any age. A proper hormone panel is required before starting any protocol. How long does it take to see results? Timelines vary. Some patients notice changes within 4 to 8 weeks, and protocols are often refined over 3 to 6 months. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed. Is bioidentical hormone therapy safe? BHRT is prescribed and monitored by a qualified practitioner. Dr. MacMillan uses evidence-informed protocols and regular follow-up testing to monitor your treatment. As with any hormone therapy, risks and benefits are reviewed with you before you start. ## Ready to Start Feeling Like Yourself Again? Hormone imbalance is real, and you don't have to manage it alone. Dr. Lucas MacMillan and the team at Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre in North Vancouver are here to help you find a path forward that fits your body and your life. Book Now ## When Pain Becomes the Background Noise of Your Life Chronic pain and inflammation rarely announce themselves loudly at first. They creep in, slowly reshaping your days. You wake up stiff. You push through fatigue that no amount of sleep seems to fix. Your joints ache, your digestion feels off, and the brain fog makes it hard to focus. You've seen doctors, had bloodwork done, and been told everything looks fine. But you don't feel fine. Many people living with chronic inflammation are caught in a frustrating middle ground: real symptoms, but no clear answers from conventional testing. Anti-inflammatory medications may offer temporary relief, but they don't address why your body is inflamed in the first place. Without understanding the root cause, the cycle continues. ## What Is Chronic Inflammation? Inflammation is a normal, healthy response to injury or infection. But when it becomes chronic, persisting for months or years without an obvious cause, it quietly damages tissues and disrupts nearly every system in the body. Chronic inflammation has been linked to conditions including joint pain, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders, digestive issues, [hormonal imbalances](/bioidentical-hormone-therapy-north-vancouver), and [fatigue](/naturopathic-care-chronic-fatigue-low-energy). Triggers vary widely: diet, stress, environmental toxins, gut dysfunction, and hormonal shifts can all contribute. Identifying your specific drivers is what makes naturopathic care different from a one-size-fits-all approach. ## How We Approach Chronic Inflammation at Delbrook Integrative At Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre, Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND , takes a whole-person view of chronic pain and inflammation. Rather than managing symptoms, the goal is to understand the full picture: your history, lifestyle, diet, stress load, and functional lab markers where appropriate. Your care plan is built around your body, not a generic protocol. Depending on your presentation, treatment may involve: Your care plan is built around your body, not a generic protocol. Depending on your presentation, treatment may involve: Targeted nutrition and anti-inflammatory dietary guidance Evidence-informed supplementation and botanical medicine IV nutrient therapy to support tissue repair and immune regulation ## What to Expect at Your First Visit In-Depth Intake Your first appointment is a 60-minute conversation. Dr. MacMillan reviews your full health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and any previous test results to build a clear picture of what's driving your inflammation. Functional Testing and a Personalized Plan Where appropriate, functional lab testing helps look for contributing factors that standard panels may not cover. From there, you'll receive a written care plan with specific, actionable steps. Ongoing Support Chronic inflammation doesn't resolve overnight. We schedule follow-up visits to track your progress and adjust your plan over time. ## What to Expect from Naturopathic Care Addressing chronic inflammation at the root level takes time. Care is aimed at more than pain reduction: - Pain and mobility — Care aims to reduce joint stiffness and discomfort so you can move and exercise - Energy and focus — Fatigue and brain fog are considered alongside inflammation - A plan that makes sense — You receive a written plan that explains what may be contributing to your symptoms and the next steps ## Frequently Asked Questions About Naturopathic Care for Chronic Inflammation Can a naturopath help with chronic pain? Yes. Naturopathic doctors are trained to assess and address chronic pain through a root-cause lens. Rather than relying solely on pain management, naturopathic care looks at contributing factors like inflammation, gut health, nutritional deficiencies, and stress to develop a more complete treatment approach. How is naturopathic treatment for inflammation different from conventional care? Conventional medicine typically focuses on reducing inflammation with medications like NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Naturopathic care aims to identify and address the underlying drivers of inflammation, using diet, supplementation, lifestyle changes, and targeted therapies. Naturopathic and conventional care can be used together. How long does care take? It varies by individual and severity, and results cannot be guaranteed. Chronic conditions take time to develop and often take time to address, so care is aimed at steady, sustainable progress. Does insurance cover naturopathic visits? Many extended health plans in BC, including Pacific Blue Cross, Manulife, and Sun Life, include naturopathic coverage. We recommend checking your policy details. Delbrook Integrative offers direct billing for eligible plans. Do I need a referral to see a naturopathic doctor? No referral is needed. You can book directly through our online booking system at any time. ## Ready to Get to the Root of Your Pain? Book Now ## The Importance of Accurate Assessments & Diagnostics Testing can help identify imbalances in the body and set targets for treatment and future monitoring. This helps guide treatment decisions. ## Lab Testing Types and Options Many options are available, and your individual case and preferences will be taken into account. Most common tests include the following: Blood tests for thyroid function, iron status, blood sugars, liver function, and hormones Urinary tests for hormone levels, adrenal function, and evidence of infection Salivary tests for hormone levels and genetic assessments If you have tests you are interested in, ask Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND, who works with a range of lab tests from different providers. He can help you find the most appropriate tests for your particular needs and help to assess whether the test is worthwhile. If appropriate at this point, he will provide access to the test and results, and help to interpret the results and build a plan unique to your needs and goals. ## Recommended Approach Start with assessments and lab tests as appropriate. Appropriate lab testing can help make an assessment more accurate and guide treatment. We can quickly identify whether one parameter, such as thyroid function, is involved and shorten the list of possible causes. Results are often available in one business day. Modern testing adds a lot to our ability to help, but it isn't always appropriate or sufficient on its own. But chronic pain, burnout, and injury also live in the nervous system. Christina works alongside our clinical team so you stop fighting your symptoms and start regulating them — building a foundation to support daily life and performance. How She Works ## Evidence-based methods, delivered with warmth. ### Internal Family Systems Christina is a Certified IFS Therapist — a credential that requires supervised clinical practice and a formal review by the IFS Institute. She works with the different parts of you, including the ones that formed to protect you from pain, with curiosity instead of judgment. ### Pain Reprocessing Therapy For chronic pain that has outlasted the original injury, this helps retrain how your brain interprets pain signals, so your body can unlearn a threat response that's no longer serving it. ### EMDR For processing stored trauma, physical or emotional, that keeps your nervous system stuck on high alert. ### CBT & Somatic Approaches Practical tools for the thought patterns and body sensations that come with prolonged stress, physical limitation, or the pressure of performing at a high level. Her Own Recovery ## A former ultramarathon runner, on the other side of the table. "I've stood where a lot of my patients stand — sidelined, unsure who I was without the mileage." Christina's own history of athletic injury and recovery shapes how she works with patients facing physical limitation — not as an abstract concept, but as lived experience. She understands the identity loss that can come with forced downtime, and helps patients slow down and rebuild self-trust, rather than simply push through or suppress what they're feeling. Who This Is For ## This might be for you if... - Living with chronic pain that hasn't responded to rest or treatment alone - An injured or sidelined athlete navigating identity loss, or working to return stronger than before - A high-performer or high-stress professional looking to build resilience, not just recover from burnout - Carrying complex or relational trauma and looking for a trauma-informed, collaborative space Free Guide ## The Nervous System Reset — a free Nervous System Toolkit by Christina Casperson. Clinic Director at Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre in North Vancouver. A registered nurse before I was a naturopathic physician — and still the same clinician who wants to know why something is happening before deciding what to do about it. [Get Started Today](https://delbrook.janeapp.com/) From Nursing to Naturopathic Medicine ## The question that changed my career I started out as a registered nurse. During a mental health rotation, a patient asked me something I couldn't answer well: were the medications he was on actually the best thing for his health? He wasn't being difficult. He genuinely wanted to know, and I realized I had been trained to administer care without always being equipped to interrogate it. That question stayed with me. My wife Brittany, an ICU nurse, was the one who pointed me toward the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. What I found there wasn't an alternative to what I already knew — it was the other half of it. If you leave an appointment knowing more about your own body than when you walked in, that's part of the treatment, not a bonus. “Are these medications actually the best thing for my health?” A patient's question during a mental health nursing rotation — and the reason I went back to school. Scope of Practice ## What I actually treat Most of what I see falls into a few broad areas. If you're not sure whether your situation fits, that's usually worth a conversation rather than a guess. ### Pain & Musculoskeletal Injury ✓ Joint pain and osteoarthritis ✓ Tendon and ligament injuries ✓ Chronic and persistent pain ✓ Sports and overuse injuries ### Hormones & Longevity ✓ Menopause and perimenopause ✓ Testosterone and men's health ✓ Sleep and recovery ✓ Metabolic and weight concerns ✓ Sexual health and intimacy ### Energy & Whole-Body Health ✓ Chronic fatigue and low energy ✓ Digestive concerns ✓ Lab testing and interpretation ✓ Nutritional and IV therapies Injection & Regenerative Therapies ## Yes — including the back, the neck, and most places you'd think to ask about This comes up constantly, so I want to be direct about it. Patients often assume injection therapy stops at knees and shoulders. It doesn't. ### Where I inject The most common areas are knees, shoulders, hips, and ankles. Beyond those, I also perform neck injections, spinal injections, sacroiliac joints, and the related ligaments around them. That isn't a closed list. I've treated a wide range of less common areas on request — including the pubic bone — and I'm genuinely open to unusual asks. If you're wondering whether somewhere can be treated, ask me rather than assuming it can't. ### What I inject I work with the full range of injectable solutions: corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, prolotherapy, and platelet-rich plasma, among others. Which one makes sense depends on the tissue, the timeline, and what you're trying to get back to doing. ### On ultrasound guidance I use ultrasound where it genuinely adds value — not reflexively for every injection. Some structures simply don't show well under it, and staring at a screen can pull attention away from what my hands and the needle are telling me. What you describe as I work matters too. That said, I can ultrasound-assess tissue any time it's clinically useful, or simply because you'd like to see what's going on underneath. ### The training behind it My advanced orthopedic injection training — the highest level recognized by my regulatory college at the time, including PRP — dates back to 2016, now over a decade. That level of training covers the entire body, spine and neck included. ### Seriously considering injections? Most patients start with a brief complimentary phone chat — about ten minutes — so we can work out whether this is the right fit and whether what I offer is actually what you need. Book a Free Phone Chat Sexual Health ## Sexual health deserves a real conversation It is one of the most common things patients quietly wonder about, and one of the most rarely addressed in a ten minute appointment. I set aside real time for it, because it matters. ### Hormone-based treatment Libido, arousal, and comfort are often tied to hormonal shifts. When that is the driver, treatment can make a real difference. I also refer directly to pelvic floor physiotherapy and other specialists when that is the better path forward. ### Education built around women, specifically Female sexuality has often been assumed to work the same way male sexuality does. It doesn't. Understanding the real differences, together as a couple, tends to lead to a more satisfying intimate relationship and a roadmap built around your own bodies rather than a generic one. ### Why it's worth bringing up Not everyone wants or needs a sexual connection, and that is entirely fine. But for those who do, the best current research suggests a sex life you're personally satisfied with, alongside healthy connection more broadly, is associated with living longer, beyond the obvious quality of life benefits. ### No judgment, ever If this is something you've been sitting with, I would genuinely like to hear about it. It's a normal part of health, and a normal part of the conversation here. Working Alongside Your Existing Care ## I'm not going to ask you to stop your medications Naturopathic and conventional medicine aren't opposing camps, and I don't practise as though they are. I regularly work with patients who are on statins, antidepressants, GLP-1 medications, and a long list of other prescriptions — building around those treatment plans rather than against them. My nursing background means I read your chart the way your other providers do. That makes collaboration straightforward rather than adversarial. There is one clear boundary worth stating plainly: I do not treat active cancer. Those cases are referred directly to oncology specialists, where they belong. Testing & Advanced Diagnostics ## I like testing. I don't like testing for the sake of it. Good testing answers a question you actually have. I use conventional and advanced labs readily, but I hold the large, expensive investigations back until there's a clear clinical need, a genuine point of confusion to resolve, or a patient who understands the trade-offs and specifically wants to go looking. Imaging and body composition I'm comfortable working with full-body MRI screening such as Prenuvo, and with DEXA scans for body composition and bone density from BodyComp and other providers. If you've already had one, bring it — I like incorporating that information into my assessment. In some cases I'll suggest one. Genetic testing I work with genetic panels including those from DNA Power and other providers, and I'm happy to interpret results you've had run elsewhere. Functional and specialty labs On an as-needed basis I use organic acid testing, urine heavy metal excretion testing, chronic infection panels, and a wide range of conventional bloodwork. How I decide what's worth running The question I ask before ordering anything is simple: will this change what we do next? If the answer is yes, or if it resolves real uncertainty, it's worth running. If it just produces more data without changing the plan, I'll tell you that too. Training & Credentials ## The training behind the practice ### Education & Licensing Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, Boucher campus, graduated 2016. Registered Nurse background, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grant MacEwan University. Currently registered with the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia. ### Injection, Regenerative & Hormone Training Advanced injection therapy training since 2016, including prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma, completed through Maui Regenerative Medicine, with further specialization through the Naturopathic Academy of Regenerative Injection Therapy. Ultrasound-guided techniques applied across the full body, including spine and neck. Hormone and longevity training completed through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the LP3 Network, supporting my work in hormone optimization, sleep, and metabolic health. ### Continuing Education Ongoing continuing education spans hormone therapy, pharmacology, immunization, and clinical toxicology, reflecting a commitment to staying current across both naturopathic and conventional medicine. I also offer a wide range of conventional and advanced lab testing, and continue training in functional medicine and intravenous therapeutics. Speaking, Media & Publications ## Talking about this work publicly I'm a frequent guest on television and podcast programs, including nineteen episodes of Run With It covering topics from hormones and injury recovery to sleep and pain management, as well as 21st Century Pain Solutions . My contributions extend to print, with articles for regional publications and a licensing exam resource, plus a pair of articles written for Christine Blanchette's network, and a featured webinar for the American Association of Naturopathic Medical Colleges, a North American organization, speaking to nurses and other healthcare providers exploring a transition into naturopathic medicine. Beyond media, I've presented directly to local businesses on topics ranging from hormones and menopause to testosterone, sleep, exercise, and recovery. ### Where you'll find that work Run With It — recurring guest, Doctor's Corner segment 21st Century Pain Solutions — podcast guest AANMC — featured webinar presenter NPLEX Review — publication contributor Evidence Informed Joint Mobilization — contributor Sportswave, Sherbrook Record, Snowshoe Magazine, Christine Blanchette's network — articles A Note From the Other Side of the Table ## Then I became the patient I trained in martial arts from the age of fourteen, most recently Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, until a significant injury ended that chapter. I herniated discs in my neck, and the change to my daily life was substantial. I had been treating injuries like mine for years. What I hadn't done was live one. Working through the system as a patient — specialist referrals, waiting on MRIs and EMGs, explaining the same history over and over — made me a better practitioner. I understand the waiting, the uncertainty, and how much it matters when someone explains what they're actually seeing. These days you'll find me hiking the North Shore with my wife and daughters. Common Questions ## Questions patients actually ask me Do you do injections in the back or neck, or only knees and shoulders? Both. Knees, shoulders, hips, and ankles are the most common areas I treat, but I also perform spinal injections, neck injections, sacroiliac joint injections, and injections into the surrounding ligaments. My level of orthopedic injection training covers the entire body. If you're wondering about a specific area, ask — I've treated plenty of unusual requests. Will you tell me to stop taking my prescription medications? No. I regularly work with patients taking statins, antidepressants, GLP-1 medications, and many other prescriptions, and I build around those plans rather than against them. My background as a registered nurse means I'm comfortable working alongside your other providers rather than in competition with them. Do you work with Prenuvo full-body MRI results? Yes. I'm familiar with Prenuvo and other full-body MRI screening, and I'm glad to incorporate those findings into my assessment. Bring the report with you if you've had one. In some situations I'll recommend a scan, though I don't treat it as a routine first step. Can you interpret DEXA scans, genetic tests, or functional lab results I've already had done? Yes. I regularly work with DEXA body composition and bone density scans from BodyComp and other providers, genetic panels including DNA Power, organic acid testing, urine heavy metal excretion testing, and chronic infection panels. If you've already invested in testing elsewhere, I'd rather use it than duplicate it. Will you order a lot of expensive tests? Not by default. I use testing readily where it changes the plan, but I hold back the large, costly investigations until there's a clear clinical need, real diagnostic uncertainty to resolve, or you've told me you understand the trade-offs and want to look anyway. What is the difference between prolotherapy and PRP? Both are regenerative injection therapies that aim to stimulate healing rather than simply mask pain. Prolotherapy uses an irritant solution to prompt a healing response in ligaments and tendons. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, uses a concentrated portion of your own blood to deliver growth factors directly to the injured tissue. Which one suits you depends on the tissue involved, how long it's been an issue, and what you're trying to get back to doing. Do you use ultrasound for every injection? No, and that's deliberate. I use ultrasound guidance where it genuinely improves precision. Some structures don't image well, and watching a screen can distract from what my hands and the needle are telling me. I can ultrasound-assess tissue whenever it's clinically useful, or simply because you'd like to see what's happening underneath. Is a naturopathic physician the same as a naturopath? In British Columbia, naturopathic doctors are regulated health professionals. I hold a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree, am registered with the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia, and carry prescriptive authority. British Columbia is one of the provinces where the title "naturopathic physician" is permitted, which is why I use it. What conditions do you not treat? I do not treat active cancer. Those cases are referred directly to oncology specialists. Beyond that, if something falls outside what I can genuinely help with, I'll tell you plainly and point you toward the right person. Where are you located and are you accepting new patients? I practise at Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre in North Vancouver, British Columbia, where I am also the clinic director. I am currently accepting new patients. ## Ready to take the next step in your health? Book Now ## Bio-Identical Hormones Hormones are the communication molecules that our body uses to turn certain functions up or down. They can increase our metabolism and sex drive, or leave us feeling frustrated, depressed, sleepless, and unable to move forward. It is absolutely important to have healthy hormone function for optimal health, and this is often an important part of disease management. Bio-identical hormones are available by prescription only, and are one option to directly increase levels of circulating hormones if a deficiency is believed to be responsible for negative symptoms, or if lab tests suggest that safety and function would be improved with their use. We often use nutrients, herbs, or other therapies to support hormonal health; this may be done with hormone therapies, or instead of them. It is important to be accurately assessed, and have a thorough discussion regarding hormone supportive therapies to be sure you receive the best care and advice possible. ## Prescription Medications There are times when dietary modifications, lifestyle adjustments, nutrients, herbs, and other therapies simply are not appropriate, or are not having the desired response. Appropriately used prescription medication can greatly reduce pain and discomfort, improve quality of life, and help us live our desired life. While medication is not appropriate for everyone, it is a powerful tool to use when needed. Simple prescription medication is rarely given without recommendations on other supportive measures, preventative options, and a plan moving forward to discontinue medication or to appropriately manage symptoms and side effects. ## Start Your Journey Today Book an assessment with [Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND](/dr-lucas-macmillan) to see whether hormone support is right for you. Book Now ## When "Normal" Test Results Don't Match How You Feel Chronic fatigue and persistent low energy are among the most frustrating conditions to navigate — not because help doesn't exist, but because the underlying causes can be hard to identify. You might be told your thyroid is fine, your iron is fine, your results are all within range. But you still feel like you're carrying a weight you can't put down. The reality is that fatigue is rarely one thing. It can be rooted in nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, disrupted sleep, [chronic inflammation](/chronic-pain-inflammation), blood sugar instability, or nervous system dysregulation — sometimes several at once. When these patterns go unaddressed, the exhaustion compounds. Brain fog sets in. Your motivation fades. What used to feel manageable starts to feel impossible. Many of our patients have spent months or years cycling through appointments without a clear answer. A root-cause approach looks at the full picture of your history, symptoms and test results. ## What Is Chronic Fatigue and Why Does It Persist? Chronic fatigue isn't the same as being tired after a hard week. It's a pattern of persistent, unexplained exhaustion that doesn't improve with rest and often comes with other symptoms: brain fog, poor sleep quality, low motivation, mood changes, or increased sensitivity to stress. [hormonal imbalances](/bioidentical-hormone-therapy-north-vancouver) In naturopathic medicine, chronic fatigue is understood as a signal that something in the body's systems is out of balance — not a diagnosis to simply manage. Whether the driver is adrenal dysregulation, thyroid function, mitochondrial stress, nutrient depletion, or immune activity, the goal is to identify the pattern and address it directly. ## How We Approach Fatigue at Delbrook Integrative Dr. Lucas MacMillan, BScN, ND takes a thorough, individualized approach to chronic fatigue and low energy. Rather than applying a template, we start by understanding your full picture: your symptoms, history, lifestyle, stress load, and any previous testing. From there, we use targeted functional testing where relevant, including expanded thyroid panels, cortisol rhythm, nutrient markers, and inflammatory indicators. Treatment is built around your findings, not a generic protocol. Our approach may include: Nutritional and supplement support targeted to your specific deficiencies Hormonal and adrenal support where indicated IV nutrient therapy to replenish nutrients when oral supplementation isn't enough ## Personalized Solutions for Chronic Fatigue What to Expect at Your First Appointment Comprehensive Intake Your initial consultation is longer than you're used to. We take the time to understand not just your symptoms, but the patterns behind them — including sleep, stress, digestion, and energy throughout the day. Targeted Investigation Based on your intake, we'll identify which areas to test or assess more closely, so our recommendations are grounded in your actual data, not assumptions. A Clear Plan, Revisited You leave with a personalized care plan and a timeline for reassessment. Fatigue has layers — we work through them with you, adjusting as you improve. ## Uncover the Path to Renewed Vitality ### What to Expect as You Work on Fatigue - Steadier, more reliable energy throughout the day — Care aims to support consistent energy through the day. - Clearer thinking and improved focus — Care aims to support mental clarity and concentration. - Better resilience to stress — Care aims to support adrenal and nervous system health and your response to stress. ## Naturopathic Medicine & Consults Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are primary care physicians who blend centuries-old knowledge and a philosophy of supporting the body's natural healing processes. Naturopathic medicine uses a longer appointment format and broader testing where appropriate. We look for functional imbalances that can cause symptoms even when conventional markers appear normal. How long does it take to feel better? This depends on how long the fatigue has been present and what's driving it. Timelines vary by person, and results cannot be guaranteed. We'll discuss an expected timeline at your first appointment. Do I need a referral? No referral is needed to see a naturopathic doctor at Delbrook Integrative. You can book directly online or by phone. Does insurance cover naturopathic care? Many extended health plans — including Pacific Blue Cross, Manulife, and Sun Life — cover naturopathic medicine. We offer direct billing for eligible plans. Check your benefits or ask us when you book. Can naturopathic care work alongside my existing treatments? Yes. We regularly work collaboratively with patients who are also seeing their family doctor or specialist. Our goal is to complement your existing care, not replace it. ## Ready to Look at What's Going On? Chronic fatigue and low energy are not something you have to accept. Many extended health benefit plans in BC include coverage for naturopathic medicine. We recommend checking with your provider before your appointment. Direct billing may be available, so contact us to confirm. How is a naturopathic doctor different from a family doctor? NDs complete four years of post-graduate medical training and are licensed to diagnose and treat. At Delbrook Integrative we offer an integrated approach to care, which may lean on any combination of PRP and prolotherapy injections, RMT services, sleep assessments and treatments, lab testing, and dietary & lifestyle optimization. To learn more about whether regenerative injections such as PRP or our integrated approach may be suitable for you, book your complimentary brief consult now. ## Hormone Optimization Hormone levels can influence healing. Testosterone, growth hormone, cortisol, and other hormones may be part of the picture. Hormones can be assessed by targeted clinic assessments and lab tests. If all is healthy, we move on to other causes. If not, we can discuss options to support hormone health. ## Sleep Optimization Our bodies regenerate and heal while we sleep, though this aspect of healing is often not addressed. The number of hours (sleep quantity) and the depth or type of sleep (sleep quality) are both important factors. If you aren't sleeping well your body's hormones can be affected, and your ability to exercise, focus, perform, and heal can all be disrupted. We can work with you on supporting your sleep. ## Pain Therapies FAQ How Long Does a PRP Treatment Take? A standard PRP treatment can be completed in 75 minutes or less, most of which is spent preparing your PRP sample. The actual injection procedure generally takes 5-10 minutes, or less in some cases. What is The Difference Between Prolotherapy & PRP? Prolotherapy is the injection of dextrose (a medical sterile sugar) to cause the body to release growth factors, whereas PRP involves drawing blood, removing the growth factors, and concentrating them to a higher degree. Both increase growth factors to help with healing, repair and growth. PRP creates a higher concentration of growth factors than prolotherapy. What Is the Right Treatment for Pain? The right treatment is different for different people. For some, PRP treatments may be an option. For others, improving sleep while focussing on basic rehab activities may be appropriate. For others, it may be a combination of increasing movement & stress outlets. Our practitioners select treatment options based on you and your goals, and a consult can help you review your options. How can I Learn More About These Therapies? Book a complimentary brief consult with Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND to discuss relevant options including pros and cons. Some patients are not appropriate candidates for different therapies, and a brief consult can help to define the options here. ## Start Your Journey Today Book your complimentary brief consult and let's find the pain relief approach that fits you. As we age, our bodies undergo various changes that can lead to body pain and reduced mobility. However, with the right knowledge and strategies, it's possible to maintain an active and pain-free lifestyle. In this blog, we will explore four key points that delve into the natural aging process, the changes it brings to the body, and effective ways to stay active while managing body pain. ## 1. Understanding the Natural Aging Process Aging is a natural and inevitable process that affects everyone differently. It often brings about changes in joint health, muscle strength, and flexibility. It's important to acknowledge these changes as part of the normal aging process and not as a personal failure. By understanding and accepting these changes, we can develop a positive mindset towards managing body pain. ## 2. Recognizing Common Changes and Challenges As we age, the changes in our joints and muscles become more prevalent. These changes can make physical activities more challenging and increase the risk of body pain. By recognizing these changes, we can adapt our exercise routines to accommodate them. Modifications such as gentle stretching, low-impact exercises, and incorporating resistance training can help maintain joint mobility, improve muscle strength, and enhance flexibility. ## 3. Exercise Modifications for an Active Lifestyle To stay active and reduce body pain, it's essential to modify exercise routines to suit aging bodies. Engaging in activities that are low-impact, such as swimming, walking, yoga, or tai chi, can provide numerous benefits without putting excessive strain on joints and muscles. These exercises promote cardiovascular health, improve balance, and enhance overall mobility. Remember to start slowly and gradually increase the intensity to avoid overexertion and injury. ## 4. Lifestyle Tips for a Pain-Free, Active Life In addition to exercise modifications, certain lifestyle habits can contribute to a pain-free and active life. Maintaining a healthy diet, managing weight, and staying hydrated are crucial for supporting overall joint and muscle health. Adequate rest and sleep are essential for recovery and reducing fatigue. Additionally, practicing stress-reducing techniques like meditation or deep breathing exercises can help manage pain by promoting relaxation and enhancing emotional well-being. ## Aging brings changes to our bodies, but it doesn't mean that an active lifestyle is out of reach. By understanding the natural aging process, recognizing the common changes and challenges, and making exercise modifications, we can maintain an active and pain-free life. Incorporating lifestyle habits that support overall health and well-being further enhances our ability to manage body pain effectively. If you're experiencing persistent body pain or seeking additional support in managing your pain and maintaining mobility, consider giving our office a call. Remember, it's never too late to start embracing an active lifestyle and prioritizing your health. *The content in this blog is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. We step on it, watch the number go up or down, and make decisions from there. But here's the problem: body weight tells you almost nothing about what's actually happening inside your body. Two people can weigh exactly the same and have completely different health trajectories, because of what that weight is made of. A body composition scan changes this. [At Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre in North Vancouver,](https://delbrookintegrative.com/) [Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND](https://delbrookintegrative.com/users/dr-lucas-macmillan) incorporates body composition analysis into his naturopathic assessments, including ordering DEXA scanning where appropriate, to get a precise picture of what's happening beneath the surface: how much of your body is fat, where that fat is located, how much is lean muscle tissue, and what that distribution means for your long-term health. ## What Is a Body Composition Scan? A body composition scan measures the proportion of fat, muscle, bone, and water in your body. Unlike a standard scale, it tells you not just how much you weigh, but what you're made of. A widely used, well-validated method for this assessment is a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) [1]. Originally developed to measure bone density, DEXA scanning is now commonly used for body composition analysis because of its precision. It distinguishes between different tissue types throughout your entire body, giving a more accurate breakdown than methods such as bioelectrical impedance scales or skinfold calipers [1]. A full body composition test typically shows: - Total body fat percentage - Lean muscle mass by region - Visceral fat level - Bone mineral density - Android/gynoid fat distribution ratios Each of these data points tells a different story about your health. ## Visceral Fat vs. Subcutaneous Fat: Why the Difference Matters Not all fat is created equal. Subcutaneous fat sits just beneath the skin, it's the fat you can pinch. Visceral fat is deeper, wrapping around your abdominal organs: the liver, pancreas, and intestines. While subcutaneous fat is largely cosmetic, visceral fat is metabolically active in ways that directly affect your health. Elevated visceral fat levels are strongly associated with insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, cardiovascular disease risk, hormonal dysregulation, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Research has linked higher visceral fat to higher all-cause mortality in adults aged 65 and under [2], and people with a normal BMI but excess abdominal fat have been found to have higher mortality than those without it [3]. The unsettling part: you can have a completely normal body weight and still carry a concerning visceral fat level. This is sometimes called "normal weight obesity"; it's more common than most people realize, and it's entirely invisible to a bathroom scale. A DEXA body composition scan is one of the few ways to accurately quantify visceral fat. Understanding your visceral fat range gives you a baseline and a real target to work toward. ## What Visceral Fat Levels Actually Mean DEXA results typically report visceral fat as an area measurement in cm² or as a risk category. A visceral fat area of about 100 cm² is a commonly used threshold for increased metabolic risk, originally established using CT imaging [4]; your results are best interpreted alongside your other health information. But the number on its own is only half the picture. When Dr. MacMillan reviews body composition results with patients, he uses those findings as a starting point for a broader conversation: why is visceral fat elevated in this patient? Is it dietary? Hormonal, such as low testosterone, elevated cortisol, or estrogen imbalance? Sedentary lifestyle? Poor sleep? Chronic stress? The answer shapes the treatment. [Naturopathic medicine](https://delbrookintegrative.com/services/naturopathic-medicine) aims to address visceral fat upstream, looking at root causes rather than managing numbers in isolation. A naturopathic approach might include: - Nutrition planning targeted to reducing visceral fat, including anti-inflammatory eating patterns and strategic macronutrient timing - Targeted supplementation: berberine, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and others depending on your labs - Hormonal assessment and support, including bioidentical hormone therapy where appropriate - Exercise prescription tailored to your composition baseline and goals - Stress and cortisol regulation, because chronic stress and elevated cortisol have been associated with visceral fat accumulation This is different from a generic "eat less, move more" prescription. It's a targeted protocol built around your specific body composition analysis findings. ## Who Should Consider a Body Composition Assessment? Body composition testing is useful for almost anyone, but it's especially valuable if you: - Have a family history of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or metabolic syndrome - Are experiencing unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or hormonal symptoms despite "normal" bloodwork - Have hit a plateau in weight loss despite consistent effort - Want a concrete baseline before starting a health optimization or longevity protocol - Are in perimenopause or menopause, when body composition tends to shift significantly It's also a useful tool for tracking progress. Because DEXA measures what the scale can't, patients can see real changes in lean muscle and visceral fat even when their weight stays the same. ## Longevity Is Built on What You Can Measure One of the most important shifts in naturopathic and functional medicine over the last decade is the move from reactive care to proactive optimization. Body composition analysis is a valuable tool for that shift, because you can't optimize what you can't measure. If you're curious about what your body composition reveals about your current health and long-term risk, Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND at [Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre in North Vancouver](https://delbrookintegrative.com/) can help you interpret your results and build a targeted naturopathic plan around them. It may be time to try massage therapy. Back pain, a common ailment affecting individuals of all ages, can significantly hinder daily life and overall well-being. Massage therapy offers a non-invasive, therapeutic approach to easing common contributors to back pain, such as muscular tension. This blog explores how massage techniques can target the back's intricate structures to help provide relief. ## The Impact of Massage on Back Pain Massage therapy goes beyond relaxation: research suggests it can help relieve low back pain in the short term, especially as part of a broader care plan [1]. It can also help relieve muscular tension by employing techniques such as deep tissue massage and myofascial release. These methods focus on loosening tight muscles, particularly in areas prone to tension, such as the lower back and shoulders. Furthermore, by releasing tension in key muscle groups, massage may help ease postural strain on the back. Regular sessions may also help improve flexibility and range of motion. By promoting muscle relaxation, massage can make it easier to stay active with less discomfort. ## Massage Techniques for Back Pain The field of massage therapy offers a wide variety of techniques and approaches. Below are a few common types of massage therapy: - Deep Tissue Massage: Targets deep layers of muscle and connective tissue, often used for chronic tightness and pain. - Myofascial Release: Focuses on releasing muscle tightness by relaxing the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles. - Trigger Point Massage: Practitioners apply firm pressure with a finger or an instrument for several seconds to tender muscle tissue to help ease pain and stiffness; pressure is increased as the trigger point softens. ## Your Healing Journey Massage therapy can be one part of a broader plan for managing back pain [1]. Incorporating regular massage sessions into your wellness routine may help you maintain a healthier back, move more easily, and improve your quality of life. If back pain is impacting your daily activities, consider exploring the benefits of massage therapy. Whether you're recovering from an injury or simply seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, embracing the great outdoors can play a key role in your rehabilitation and overall wellness journey. The natural environment provides a calming backdrop that can reduce stress, boost mood, and encourage physical activity. The fresh air, natural light, and tranquil surroundings all contribute to a sense of well-being that is hard to replicate indoors. For those going through rehabilitation, outdoor activities can be particularly beneficial, offering a refreshing change of scenery and a gentle way to ease back into movement. ## Outdoor Activities to Support Rehabilitation Incorporating outdoor activities into your rehabilitation plan can help you stay motivated and engaged. The variety of environments and activities available outside can provide a low-impact way to rebuild strength, flexibility, and endurance. One of the simplest yet most effective outdoor activities is walking. A gentle walk through a park or along a nature trail can be a great way to start moving again without putting too much strain on your body. Walking on uneven terrain also helps to improve balance and coordination, which are crucial components of rehabilitation. For those looking to add more variety, activities like cycling, swimming in natural bodies of water, or practicing yoga in a park can all offer additional benefits. These activities not only help to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility but also allow you to reconnect with nature, which can be incredibly uplifting. ## Tips for Getting the Most Out of Nature - **Choose the Right Environment:** Select outdoor settings that match your current level of ability. Start with flat, even surfaces and gradually introduce more challenging terrain as your strength and confidence grow. - **Stay Consistent:** Regular outdoor activity, even if it's just a few times a week, can help you maintain progress in your rehabilitation and enhance your overall wellness. - **Listen to Your Body:** Pay attention to how your body feels during and after outdoor activities. It's important to pace yourself and avoid overexertion, especially when you're in the rehabilitation phase. ## Supporting Your Wellness Journey While spending time in nature can greatly enhance your rehabilitation and wellness efforts, it's important to remember that professional care is available to support you along the way. Whether you're recovering from an injury or simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, integrating outdoor activities with regular treatment can help you achieve your goals more effectively. *The content in this blog is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. In an increasingly complex and often impersonal system, it's crucial to know how to advocate for your health, especially when dealing with musculoskeletal pain or injuries. This blog aims to equip you with the knowledge to become an informed patient and ensure you receive the care and attention you deserve. ## 1. Comprehensive Evaluation and Assessment The first step in your care should always be a thorough evaluation and assessment. This process is foundational in identifying the root cause of your pain or injury. This crucial step is necessary for any subsequent treatment to be successful, leaving you in a cycle of recurring discomfort. A comprehensive evaluation should include a detailed history and consultation, functional assessments to identify weaknesses or faulty movement patterns, orthopedic exams, and possibly gait analysis if necessary. This thorough approach ensures that your treatment plan addresses your body's specific needs, not just a set of symptoms. ## 2. Conservative Treatment Options Once a clear diagnosis is established, your healthcare provider should discuss conservative treatment options with you. These options often include a combination of therapies tailored to your specific condition, such as muscle therapy, joint adjustments, rehab exercises, and advice on avoiding further injuries. Remember, effective treatment isn't one-size-fits-all. Your healthcare journey should be as unique as you are, with a care plan crafted from the insights gained during your assessment. ## 3. Prevention Training The final piece of the puzzle is learning how to prevent future issues. It's one thing to treat an injury; it's another to ensure it doesn't happen again. Your healthcare provider should offer guidance on activities of daily living, return-to-work or sports advice, corrective exercises, and even tips on desk ergonomics or proper equipment. ## Taking Control of Your Health Understanding these three critical aspects of healthcare can transform your experience and outcomes. Being an informed patient means you're an active participant in your care, not just a bystander. Suppose you're currently navigating the complexities of musculoskeletal pain or injury and feel unsure about the care you're receiving. In that case, it might be time for a second opinion or a new approach. Don't hesitate to reach out and schedule an appointment with our office. We're committed to providing personalized, comprehensive care that addresses your immediate concerns and empowers you with the knowledge and tools to prevent future issues. Your health and well-being are our top priorities, and we're here to guide you on your path to recovery and resilience. --- title: "Essential Strategies for Fostering Your Child's Health and Activity" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/blog/essential-strategies-for-fostering-your-childs-health-and-activity" markdown_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/llms/blog/essential-strategies-for-fostering-your-childs-health-and-activity" lastmod: "2026-07-17T01:15:29.426Z" --- ## Nurturing an Active Lifestyle In today's digital age, encouraging children to lead active lifestyles can be challenging, but it's essential for their overall well-being. Regular physical activity not only supports their physical development but also contributes to their mental and emotional health. By fostering a habit of activity early on, you can help your child build a foundation for a healthy, active life. ## Creating a Fun and Engaging Environment The key to keeping children active is making physical activity fun and engaging. Children are more likely to participate in activities they enjoy, so it's important to explore different options and find out what resonates with them. Whether it's playing a team sport, riding bikes, or simply running around the playground, there are endless ways to keep them moving. Incorporating activity into daily routines can also make a big difference. For example, walking or biking to school, playing outside after dinner, or setting up a family game night with active games can all contribute to a more active lifestyle. Remember, the goal is to make movement a natural part of your child's day. ## Supporting Healthy Growth and Development Physical activity is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to your child's health. Proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and emotional support are also crucial components. Ensuring your child gets a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein will provide them with the energy they need to stay active and healthy. Sleep is another vital factor in your child's growth and development. Consistent sleep routines that allow for enough rest help children perform better in school, maintain a healthy weight, and have more energy for physical activities. Encouraging a regular sleep schedule can make a significant impact on their overall health. ### Tips for Encouraging Activity 1. **Be a Role Model:** Children often mimic the behavior of their parents. By leading an active lifestyle yourself, you set a positive example for your child to follow. 2. **Limit Screen Time:** Set limits on screen time and encourage more active forms of entertainment. Create a balance between technology use and physical play. 3. **Encourage Variety:** Expose your child to a variety of activities to keep them interested and engaged. Trying new sports or outdoor activities can prevent boredom and make staying active exciting. Supporting your child's health and activity levels requires a holistic approach that includes encouraging regular movement, providing balanced nutrition, and fostering a supportive environment. By implementing these strategies, you can help your child develop healthy habits that will benefit them for years to come. --- title: "Fueling Peak Performance" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/blog/fueling-peak-performance" markdown_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/llms/blog/fueling-peak-performance" lastmod: "2026-07-17T01:15:12.135Z" --- ## A Holistic Approach for Runners and Cyclists Listen to the podcast version [here on Spotify!](https://vist.ly/3mtuuik) As a naturopathic physician, I'm often asked about optimizing performance for athletes. For runners and cyclists, performance isn't just about metrics like speed or intensity. True peak performance is built on a holistic foundation, encompassing nutrition, sleep, and overall health. Let's dive into how a holistic approach can make all the difference. ## Why Overall Health Matters Despite the temptation to focus solely on quantifiable metrics like speed, the backdrop of overall health has a real impact on performance. Overlooking elements like sleep and digestion may hold back your performance without you even realizing it. Small improvements in these areas can make a real difference. Healthy habits can transform resources into results. ## Understanding Hidden Factors To uncloak these hidden factors, blood tests serve as an invaluable tool. Simple lab tests can reveal insights about iron levels, blood sugars, or insulin sensitivity. These hidden markers can be the key to unlocking athletic potential. It's about being proactive, identifying the subtle, yet crucial elements that might be holding you back. With the right data, you can tailor exercise to optimize these metrics. ## Navigating Information for Optimal Health In our information-saturated age, distinguishing actionable intel from misleading advice is critical. Diversifying sources — whether through online research, trusted health providers, or personal experience — is essential. Ultimately, the onus falls on us to weave through information. Knowledge is power, but so is knowing when to consult a professional to align advice with personal health goals. ## Supplements: The Boost You Might Need Supplements may help support performance in some cases. One of my favorites is Rhodiola rosea. Some small studies suggest it may reduce perceived exertion during exercise, although the evidence is limited and mixed [1]. As with any supplement, caution is advised; always consider consulting a professional before integrating new supplements into your regimen. ## Experience and Expertise at Delbrook Integrative At Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre, we emphasize a balanced approach. Our services include tailored lab tests, nutrient injections, dietary consultations, and more. We aim to guide individuals through their health journey, using the insights of naturopathic medicine to craft personalized strategies. It's especially important before a run, and this applies for the casual runner to the top-level athlete. You will notice that before a game of soccer or before an Olympic race, the sportsmen and sportswomen who are participating will be doing dynamic stretches. They will be lunging, jumping, and squatting to warm up their muscles and prepare their bodies for exercise. When it comes to your own warm-up, you might find yourself focusing on static stretches as it may feel like the most familiar style of stretching. Simply performing static stretches isn't necessarily the best way to prepare for a run though. It can form part of your warm-up but it shouldn't be the only thing that you do. Static stretching can improve range of motion around your joints [1]. However, most guidance recommends a general warm-up of light activity before any stretching [1]. Ideally, static stretching should be reserved for your cool down to help the muscles relax after your run. So, what can you do instead? Dynamic stretching is a good fit for the pre-workout period, as it has been shown to give small improvements in performance when done shortly before activity [1]. ## What is Dynamic Stretching? The term dynamic just means moving. It means moving the muscles around to lengthen them before your workout. Instead of simply stretching the muscle to a fully lengthened position, you are constantly moving it in and out of this position. Dynamic stretching helps you warm up and gets your whole body moving. It tells your muscles 'hey, we're about to work hard so let's get prepared'! Here are some great ways to incorporate dynamic stretching into your routine before you head out for a run: - Leg swings - Hip circles - Walking lunges - Torso twists The idea is to keep moving at all times. You could create a small circuit of each of the above exercises, performing 10-15 reps of one before moving right into the next. Aim to stretch dynamically for around 10 minutes before going out to run. This gives you time to work through each major muscle group and get ready for a tough workout. Including dynamic stretching in your warm-up helps prepare your body for running, so consider making it part of your routine before every run [1]. If an ache or injury is getting in the way of your running, our team at Delbrook Integrative is happy to help. In our latest podcast episode, Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND, joins us to dive into the fascinating world of hormones, address common misconceptions, and offer insights into optimizing hormone health. [Listen To The Podcast Version Here](https://open.spotify.com/episode/6UzdGMdFas1KGq8K1uEkX6?si=4KkgsqSLTKS9yznmP2B_Wg) ## What Are Hormones and Why Do They Matter? Hormones are the body's natural communicators, orchestrating a range of functions from metabolism and athletic performance to sexual health and motivation. Unlike the quick actions of muscle movements, hormones work behind the scenes to modify our body's internal processes. Their influence reaches far and wide, affecting everything from energy levels to body pains. In the realm of athletics, hormones can significantly impact performance. Whether you're aiming for muscle growth or seeking faster recovery times, understanding hormones can empower you to harness their potential for enhanced results. They can either be the wind beneath your wings or the anchor dragging you down. ## The Interplay Between Hormones and Lifestyle A balanced lifestyle, including proper diet, regular movement, and sufficient sleep, lays the groundwork for optimal hormone function. Yet, the relationship between lifestyle habits and hormones isn't a one-way street. Improvements in lifestyle can enhance hormonal balance, much like well-tuned hormones can boost your motivation and even your response to exercise. It's a symbiotic relationship, where both are necessary for optimal health, and it is important to consider both if you aren't meeting your goals. When hormones and lifestyle are both working for you, they can quickly move you toward your health goals. Listening to your body and observing its signals can offer clues about imbalances, steering you towards necessary changes. ## Debunking Hormonal Therapy Myths Dr. MacMillan sheds light on several misconceptions surrounding hormone therapies. Once feared and misunderstood, hormone therapy is now described in current guidelines as the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats [1, 2]. It may also improve sleep in women whose sleep is disrupted by night sweats [3], and estrogen has shown benefit for low mood during perimenopause, although it is not an approved treatment for depression [4]. It's crucial to evaluate each case individually. While hormone therapy can bring meaningful improvements for some, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Many fears stem from early study results that were widely applied to all women, and that have since been re-examined by age and time since menopause [1, 5]. Hormone therapy can be a valuable option when it is used appropriately and monitored. ## Why the Controversy? The controversy over hormone therapy stems largely from early interpretations of research and sensationalized reports that spread fear and confusion. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large study launched in the 1990s, released early results in 2002 that led to a backlash against hormone therapy [5, 6]. Today, current guidelines conclude that for healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause who have bothersome symptoms, the benefits of hormone therapy generally outweigh the risks, while risks are higher when therapy is started later [1]. By re-evaluating these old notions, more women can make informed decisions about a treatment that can relieve symptoms and improve quality of life [1, 5]. Whether you are dealing with joint pain or mood changes, hormones can play an important role in meeting your health objectives. ### Key Points - Hormones are essential communicators affecting a range of body functions, including metabolism and sexual health. - Lifestyle and hormones are interconnected; improvements in one can bolster the other. - Hormone therapy (estrogen, combined with a progestogen such as progesterone for women with a uterus) is recognized as an effective treatment for hot flushes [1, 2]. - Concerns about hormone therapy largely stem from early interpretations of the WHI study, which have since been re-examined [5]. - Personalized approaches are vital for effective hormone therapy. ### How Delbrook Integrative Can Help - Hormone Evaluations: Comprehensive assessments to determine hormonal imbalances. - Personalized Treatment Plans: Tailored strategies blending lifestyle changes and potential hormone support. - Wellness Coaching: Guidance on incorporating effective exercise and nutrition practices for optimal hormonal health. - Professional Consultations: Leverage the expertise of naturopathic doctors and, when applicable, registered massage therapists. - Ongoing Support: Regular follow-ups to track progress and adjust plans as necessary. [Sports massage](https://delbrookintegrative.com/services/registered-massage-therapy) is a hands-on therapy that targets muscle tension, soft tissue restrictions, and movement dysfunction to support pain relief and recovery. At [Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre](https://delbrookintegrative.com/about), sports massage therapy is used to help active individuals and non-athletes alike manage pain, recover from injuries, and support mobility in North Vancouver. Unlike relaxation massage, sports massage therapy is clinically focused and goal-driven. It is a hands-on option for both injury recovery and long-term musculoskeletal health. ## Understanding Sports Massage Therapy [Sports massage therapy](https://delbrookintegrative.com/sports-injury-massage-north-van) is a form of massage therapy designed to address soft tissue injuries, muscle tightness, and biomechanical imbalances. While it is commonly associated with athletes, it may also help individuals dealing with work-related strain, chronic pain, or postural issues. This form of massage uses a combination of techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, stretching, and myofascial release. The goal is to reduce muscle tension and support recovery. Sports massage therapy can be adapted to your specific needs, whether you are recovering from an injury or managing ongoing discomfort. ## How Sports Massage Supports Pain Relief Pain often develops when muscles become tight, inflamed, or restricted. Sports massage aims to ease muscle tension and guarding, which may help movement feel more comfortable. By releasing tight muscles and fascia, sports massage may help restore normal movement patterns. This can reduce strain on joints and nerves, which is relevant for managing both acute and chronic pain. Some patients notice improvements in mobility, flexibility, and comfort after consistent treatment. Individual results vary. ## Sports Massage for Common Injuries and Conditions ### Massage Therapy for Sports Injury Injuries such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, and overuse conditions may benefit from massage therapy for sports injury. Sports massage may help reduce scar tissue buildup, ease inflammation, and improve tissue elasticity. This can support injury recovery and may lower the risk of re-injury. ### Low Back Pain and Low Back Pain Massage Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek massage therapy. Tight hip flexors, glute muscles, and spinal muscles often contribute to discomfort in the lower back. A targeted low back pain massage can help ease muscle tension, support posture, and reduce pressure on spinal structures. Sports massage therapy may be helpful for individuals who sit for long periods, perform repetitive movements, or engage in physically demanding activities. ### Neck Pain and Whiplash Neck pain can result from poor posture, stress, or trauma such as whiplash. Sports massage can help relax overworked neck and upper back muscles. For patients recovering from whiplash, massage therapy can help reduce stiffness, support range of motion, and support tissue healing. [Massage therapy for neck pain](https://delbrookintegrative.com/massage-therapy-for-neck-pain-in-north-vancouver) may be combined with a structured treatment plan tailored to the individual's condition. ### Shoulder Injury and Upper Body Tension A shoulder injury can limit daily activities and athletic performance. Sports massage targets the rotator cuff, shoulder girdle, and surrounding muscles to reduce tightness and support function. This approach may be useful for both acute injuries and chronic shoulder pain caused by overuse or poor biomechanics. ## Sports Massage and Injury Recovery Injury recovery requires more than rest alone. Without proper treatment, injured tissues may heal improperly, leading to ongoing pain or reduced mobility. Sports massage therapy supports recovery by improving tissue quality and reducing compensatory movement patterns. By addressing muscular imbalances early, sports massage may help the body heal in a more balanced way. It can be one component of a rehabilitation plan for both sports-related and everyday injuries. ## Who Can Benefit From Sports Massage? Sports massage is not limited to competitive athletes. It may be helpful for: - Individuals with chronic muscle tension or joint pain - Office workers experiencing neck and low back pain - Active adults recovering from injuries - People dealing with repetitive strain or overuse injuries - Anyone seeking a drug-free option for pain At Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre, sports massage therapy is tailored to meet each patient's unique needs, regardless of activity level. ## What to Expect During Sports Massage Therapy in North Vancouver During your session, a registered massage therapist will assess your posture, movement, and areas of discomfort. Treatment techniques are then selected based on your condition, tolerance, and goals. While sports massage can involve deeper pressure, communication is always encouraged to ensure comfort. Over time, regular sessions may help with pain, mobility, and overall function. Results vary from person to person. ## Why Choose North Vancouver Massage Therapy for Pain Relief? Engaging in daily self-care not only helps maintain the therapeutic effects but also empowers you to take an active role in your health and wellness journey. This blog offers practical tips and techniques to support the positive outcomes of your massage and treatments, so you can continue to feel the benefits long after leaving the massage table. ## Stretch Your Limits Incorporating stretching into your daily routine can help maintain the flexibility and range of motion gained during your massage sessions. Focus on gentle stretches that target the areas worked on during your massage, holding each stretch for about 30 seconds without bouncing or straining. - Neck and Shoulders: Ease tension by gently tilting your head from side to side and rolling your shoulders backward and forward. - Back: Keep your back supple with stretches like the cat-cow pose or by gently twisting your torso while seated. - Legs and Hips: Counteract the effects of sitting or standing for long periods with leg stretches and hip openers, such as lunges or butterfly stretches. ## Cultivate Relaxation Practices Hands-on therapies are as much about mental relaxation as they are about physical relief. Continue to nurture a state of calm with relaxation techniques that can reduce stress and its physical manifestations in your body. - Deep Breathing: Practice deep, abdominal breathing to help calm the mind and relax muscle tension. - Mindfulness Meditation: Dedicate a few minutes each day to mindfulness, focusing on your breath or a mantra to foster a sense of peace and presence. - Warm Baths: A warm bath can be a relaxing way to ease muscle tension and stress. ## Stay Hydrated and Nourished Proper hydration and nutrition support overall tissue health and recovery. - Water Intake: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and support recovery. - Balanced Diet: Consume a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fatty fish, to support muscle recovery and overall wellness. ## Maintain an Active Lifestyle Regular physical activity complements the benefits of massage by strengthening muscles, improving circulation, and reducing stress. - Exercise: Engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's yoga, swimming, cycling, or walking, to keep your body active and flexible. - Posture Awareness: Be mindful of your posture throughout the day, especially if you sit for extended periods, to help reduce tension and strain. ## Create a Restful Environment Ensure that your living and sleeping spaces promote relaxation and comfort, aiding in the restorative process between treatment sessions. - Sleep Hygiene: Prioritize quality sleep by creating a restful environment, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, and using supportive pillows and mattresses. - Personal Relaxation Space: Designate a peaceful area in your home where you can unwind, practice your relaxation techniques, and reflect on your wellness journey. While regular treatments and massages are a key component of a holistic wellness plan, the steps you take between sessions are equally important. We're constantly bombarded with information, and our minds are often racing to keep up. Amid this mental clutter, massage therapy offers a simple way to pause, relax and support mental clarity. ## How Massage Affects the Mind Massage therapy isn't just about relaxation and muscle relief — it can also affect your mental state. During a massage, many people notice their stress easing, which can make it easier to think clearly. Research suggests massage can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress [1], creating an environment where your mind can relax, clear out the noise, and refocus on what truly matters. ## Reducing Mental Fatigue Mental fatigue is a common issue that many of us face, especially after long periods of work or intense concentration. This fatigue can make it hard to think clearly, make decisions, or even stay motivated. Regular massage therapy may help ease mental fatigue by promoting relaxation. When your body is well-rested and relaxed, your mind naturally follows suit, allowing you to approach tasks with renewed focus and energy. ## Creating a Mental Reset Sometimes, what we need most is a mental reset — a chance to step back, breathe, and clear our minds. Massage therapy provides this reset by encouraging mindfulness. As your body relaxes under the skilled hands of a massage therapist, you're given the opportunity to be present in the moment, letting go of stress and mental distractions. Many people find this helps them return to their daily tasks with clearer focus. If you'd like to make massage part of your routine, you can book with one of our registered massage therapists online at [delbrook.janeapp.com](https://delbrook.janeapp.com) or call [604-986-9191](tel:604-986-9191). ### References 1. However, taking the time to practice mindful eating can transform not only our relationship with food but also our overall well-being. Mindful eating is about being fully present during meals, savoring each bite, and listening to our body's hunger and fullness cues. This approach encourages a healthier, more balanced relationship with food, helping us make more intentional choices and enjoy our meals without guilt or stress. ## The Benefits of Mindful Eating Mindful eating goes beyond just paying attention to what's on your plate; it's about cultivating awareness and appreciation for the entire eating experience. By slowing down and focusing on the taste, texture, and aroma of your food, you can enhance your enjoyment and satisfaction. This practice can help reduce overeating by allowing your body to signal when it's full, leading to a more balanced approach to eating. Additionally, mindful eating encourages you to make more thoughtful food choices, selecting nutritious options that fuel your body and support your overall health. This practice can also help reduce emotional eating, as it encourages you to address the root causes of stress or discomfort rather than turning to food for comfort. ## Tips for Practicing Mindful Eating Incorporating mindful eating into your daily routine doesn't require a complete overhaul of your habits. Instead, it's about making small, intentional changes that help you become more aware of your eating patterns. Here are a few tips to get started: - **Slow Down:** Take the time to chew your food thoroughly and savor each bite. Eating slowly allows your body to recognize fullness signals, helping you avoid overeating. - **Eliminate Distractions:** Try to eat your meals without distractions like TV, phones, or computers. This allows you to fully focus on your food and the experience of eating. - **Listen to Your Body:** Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Eat when you're truly hungry and stop when you're satisfied, rather than when your plate is empty. - **Appreciate Your Food:** Take a moment before eating to appreciate the food in front of you. Consider where it came from, how it was prepared, and how it will nourish your body. ## Supporting Your Wellness Journey Mindful eating is just one aspect of a healthy lifestyle. When combined with regular physical activity, proper hydration, and adequate rest, it can contribute to your overall well-being. Remember, the goal of mindful eating is not perfection but progress. By making small, consistent changes, you can develop a healthier relationship with food that supports both your physical and mental health. *The content in this blog is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. You're not alone! Plantar fasciitis is a common yet often misunderstood condition that affects a specific part of the foot, causing pain and discomfort. Many people experience foot pain and are quickly diagnosed with plantar fasciitis without thorough evaluation, leading to potential misdiagnoses. This blog aims to clarify what plantar fasciitis truly is, identify its distinct symptoms, and highlight the risk factors that may predispose individuals to this condition. ## What is Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar fasciitis is a condition that affects a very specific part of the foot. Most people get a small pain in a random part of their foot and immediately get diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, without any additional testing to properly diagnose what is wrong. Interestingly, plantar fasciitis presents with certain symptoms that are quite distinct. Knowing the key signs and symptoms of plantar fasciitis will ensure that you can identify the condition in yourself if it ever pops up. ## Key Signs of Plantar Fasciitis - **Continuous Heel Discomfort:** An initial indication of plantar fasciitis is persistent heel discomfort. Typically, this pain emerges at the bottom of your heel, although it may also be felt in the arch of your foot. Often described as a sharp or stabbing sensation, it tends to intensify after periods of rest, such as upon waking in the morning. - **Post-Activity Pain:** Another sign to watch for is pain following physical exertion. If you find that your heel aches more after walking, running, or prolonged standing, it warrants attention. This discomfort may indicate strain on the plantar fascia, signaling the need for care. - **Difficulty with Toe Standing:** Plantar fasciitis can hinder your ability to stand on your toes or flex your foot upward. If such movements cause pain or discomfort, inflammation of the plantar fascia may be the culprit. Difficulty performing these actions serves as another warning sign to heed. - **Arch Tightness:** Many individuals afflicted with plantar fasciitis describe a sensation of tightness in their arch. It feels as though a band is tightly constricting the middle portion of the foot. This feeling indicates stress on the plantar fascia and should prompt further evaluation. Plantar fasciitis refers to a condition where there is a pain in the arch of the foot, where there is a thick band of tissues called the plantar fascia. This tissue connects your toes to your heel bone and it can become inflamed and swollen. This causes a stabbing pain in your foot that can span from the front all the way to the back, but most commonly appears by the heel. Because of this, heel pain is often misdiagnosed as plantar fasciitis, even though the pain in your heel could be caused by a number of things. For example, regular runners who strike the floor with their heel first can experience pain after a while. This isn't necessarily plantar fasciitis. Instead, it's more like a repetitive strain injury that could easily be misinterpreted as plantar fasciitis. ## Correct Diagnosis The diagnosis of plantar fasciitis relies on your medical background and a physical examination. During this assessment, your healthcare provider will examine your foot for tender spots. The specific location of your pain aids in identifying its underlying cause. ## Treatment - **Anti-inflammatory medicine:** Medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are often used to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. It's important to avoid taking these for more than 10 consecutive days without consulting a healthcare professional. - **Rest:** Refraining from engaging in activities that exacerbate plantar fasciitis symptoms is advised for at least a week, if feasible. - **Foot icing:** Apply ice to the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes, twice daily. To protect your skin, wrap a frozen water bottle in a thin towel and gently roll it along the bottom of your foot to massage the inflamed area. - **Supportive footwear:** Opt for sturdy, well-cushioned shoes that provide adequate arch support. Avoid wearing flat shoes like sandals or flip-flops that lack built-in arch support, and refrain from walking barefoot. - **Orthotics or shoe inserts:** Inserts can be placed inside your shoes to provide additional arch support. Your healthcare provider may recommend off-the-shelf inserts or custom-made orthotics tailored to the precise contours of your feet. - **Immobilization:** Utilizing a walking boot, also known as a walking cast or pneumatic cam walker, for a few weeks can help stabilize your foot and relieve pressure on the plantar fascia. Your provider will determine the duration of boot wear based on your specific condition. - **Massage and stretching:** Your provider or a physical therapist can demonstrate stretching exercises and massage techniques targeting your foot and calf muscles. ## Take Action By raising awareness about plantar fasciitis and emphasizing the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment, individuals can effectively manage this condition and mitigate its impact on daily life. If you suspect you may be experiencing plantar fasciitis, consult a healthcare professional for guidance tailored to your specific needs and circumstances. --- title: "Relieving the Tension: How Massage Therapy Can Benefit Office Workers" entity: "blog" canonical_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/blog/relieving-the-tension-how-massage-therapy-can-benefit-office-workers" markdown_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/llms/blog/relieving-the-tension-how-massage-therapy-can-benefit-office-workers" lastmod: "2026-07-17T01:11:54.806Z" --- The modern office environment, with its long hours of sitting and computer use, often leads to specific physical challenges, particularly neck and shoulder tension. Office workers commonly experience these discomforts due to poor posture, repetitive motion, and the stress of looming deadlines. Fortunately, massage therapy can be a helpful ally, offering relief for those tethered to their desks. This blog explores the unique challenges office workers face and how massage therapy can be a useful tool in managing and alleviating desk-related tension. ### Here are some of the most common physical challenges for office workers: - Neck Tension: Hours spent staring at a computer screen can lead to neck strain, particularly if the workstation setup is not ergonomically aligned with the user's needs. - Shoulder Pain: Inadequate posture and repetitive mouse use can contribute to shoulder pain, a common complaint among office personnel. - Lower Back Discomfort: Sitting for extended periods can put significant pressure on the lower back, leading to discomfort and stiffness. ### How Massage Therapy Provides Relief Massage therapy can target the specific muscle groups that are prone to tension due to desk work, such as the neck, shoulders, and lower back. By releasing this tension, massage can help relieve pain and may also improve flexibility and range of motion. Regular massage may also help ease muscle soreness and leave you feeling less fatigued — helpful for those who spend their days in a chair. Beyond its physical benefits, massage can have a relaxing effect on the mind, helping to reduce stress and its physical manifestations in the body. This mental relief can be particularly valuable for office workers, who often face high-pressure environments. ### Tips for Office Workers to Maximize the Benefits of Massage Regular Sessions: Incorporating regular massage therapy into your routine may provide cumulative benefits, helping to keep tension and pain from building up. Ergonomic Workstation: Complement your massage regimen with an ergonomic assessment of your workstation to ensure that you're supporting your body's natural posture. Mindful Movement: Integrate brief, frequent breaks into your workday to stretch and move, reducing the risk of muscle stiffness and promoting overall well-being. Hydration and Nutrition: Support your massage therapy's effects by staying hydrated and choosing nutritious foods that fuel your body and aid in muscle recovery. ### Embrace Massage Therapy for a Healthier Work Life For office workers grappling with the physical demands of desk jobs, massage therapy is one option to help ease neck, shoulder, and back tension. If you're an office worker looking to relieve desk-related tension, consider scheduling a massage therapy session with our registered massage therapists. Stretching helps maintain flexibility and range of motion [1] and can help you feel less stiff in your daily life. By incorporating regular stretching into your routine, you can improve your flexibility and move with more ease. ## Why Flexibility Matters Flexibility refers to the range of motion in your joints and the ability of your muscles to stretch and lengthen. Good flexibility allows your body to move more freely and efficiently. When your muscles are flexible, everyday and sporting movements can feel easier. Additionally, flexible muscles may be less prone to tension and tightness, which can contribute to discomfort, especially in the back, neck, and shoulders. ## Incorporating Stretching into Your Routine Stretching doesn't require much time or effort, but it can have a big impact on how your body feels and functions. Here are some simple tips to help you incorporate stretching into your daily routine: - Stretch Daily: Make stretching a daily habit, even if it's just for a few minutes each morning or evening. Consistency is key to improving flexibility. - Warm Up First: Before you stretch, take a few minutes to warm up your muscles with light activity, such as walking or gentle cycling. This prepares your muscles for movement and makes stretching more comfortable. - Focus on Major Muscle Groups: Pay attention to the muscles you use most often, like your hamstrings, calves, hip flexors, and lower back. Stretching these areas can have the greatest impact on your flexibility. - Hold Each Stretch: When stretching, hold each position for about 10-30 seconds (older adults may benefit from 30-60 seconds) [2]. ## The Long-Term Benefits of Stretching Incorporating regular stretching into your routine can lead to a number of long-term benefits. Over time, you may notice improved posture and reduced muscle tension. Regular stretching can also support your athletic performance by increasing your range of motion, allowing you to move with greater ease. Most importantly, it can help you enjoy your favorite activities with less stiffness and discomfort. By making stretching a regular part of your routine, you can build the flexibility your body needs to stay active and comfortable. It's a simple practice that can make a real difference to how you feel day to day. If stiffness or discomfort is holding you back, our team at Delbrook Integrative is happy to help. In the field of sleep science, circadian rhythms are key players in regulating our sleep-wake cycles. These 24-hour internal patterns dictate when we're naturally alert or drowsy and influence critical bodily functions, including hormone production. Factors like meal times, exposure to light, and exercise, when coordinated with these internal cycles, pave the way for more restful nights. Understanding and aligning with these rhythms can significantly enhance sleep quality. Here are some practical tips for aligning your daily routine with your body's internal clock: ## Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule Set a regular sleep-wake cycle, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This consistency helps regulate your circadian rhythm, promoting a more natural and restful sleep. ## Prioritize Morning Exposure to Natural Light + Limit Exposure to Artificial Light at Night Exposure to natural light in the morning helps reset your internal clock and signals to your body that it's time to be awake. Spend time outdoors or open curtains to let in sunlight, especially during the early hours of the day. In the evening, reduce exposure to artificial light, especially from screens. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, and computers can suppress melatonin production, disrupting your circadian rhythm. Consider using blue light filters on devices in the evening. ## Mindful Meal Timing Align your meals with your body's natural rhythm. Avoid heavy meals close to bedtime, as digestion may interfere with sleep. Aim to have dinner a few hours before bedtime and opt for lighter snacks if needed. ## Exercise Timing Regular physical activity can promote better sleep, but the timing matters. Try to exercise earlier in the day or in the afternoon. Strenuous exercise close to bedtime may have a stimulating effect, making it harder to fall asleep. ## Create a Sleep-Inducing Environment Make your bedroom conducive to sleep by keeping it cool, dark, and quiet. Consider using blackout curtains, earplugs, or a white noise machine to minimize disturbances. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. ## Be Mindful of Caffeine and Stimulants Limit the intake of caffeine and stimulants, especially in the afternoon and evening. These substances can interfere with your ability to fall asleep. ## Listen to Your Body Pay attention to your body's signals. If you consistently feel sleepy at a certain time in the evening, use that as a cue to start winding down and preparing for bed. ## Address Any Pain that May be Interfering with Your Sleep If persistent pain is disrupting your sleep and leaving you restless through the night, it may be time to take a proactive step toward better rest and make an appointment with us. By addressing the underlying causes of your pain through personalized assessments and treatment plans, we can help to restore not only your physical comfort but also promote restorative sleep. By incorporating these tips and aligning your daily routines with the natural rise and fall of internal processes, you can better align your lifestyle with your circadian rhythm, fostering a more natural and restorative sleep pattern. *The content in this blog is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Iron is especially important in women's health and during pregnancy, when it supports the health of both mother and baby. ## The Iron Challenge Iron deficiency is common: Canadian data suggest it affects roughly 1 in 4 women of reproductive age [1, 2]. Many people are unaware that they are iron deficient, as symptoms like fatigue, cold extremities, brain fog, hair loss, weakness, and shortness of breath can be easily overlooked . Iron absorption can be challenging due to dietary restrictions and the body's internal environment, making it difficult for some to maintain adequate levels through diet alone. ## Dietary Iron Sources Dietary iron comes in two forms, heme and non-heme, which are absorbed differently: Heme Iron : Found in red meat, fish, and poultry, heme iron is absorbed more efficiently than non-heme iron [3]. Non-Heme Iron : Found in plant foods such as legumes, leafy greens, and fortified cereals, non-heme iron is absorbed less efficiently, and how much you absorb depends on what you eat it with [3]. Because only a fraction of the iron in food is absorbed, rebuilding depleted iron stores through diet alone can take many months, which is why relying on diet alone can be difficult, especially during pregnancy [3]. By comparison, for many non-pregnant adults, a single infusion of ferric derisomaltose (Monoferric) can deliver up to 1,000 mg of iron in one visit [4, 5]. ## Iron and Pregnancy Pregnancy significantly increases iron requirements, with women needing roughly 1,000 mg of additional iron over the course of pregnancy. Iron deficiency becomes more common as pregnancy progresses, and studies suggest many women are iron deficient by the third trimester [3, 6]. Iron deficiency during pregnancy can lead to health risks for both mother and baby, including preterm delivery, low birth weight, and post-delivery infant health issues. Before Conception : Aiming for healthy iron levels before conceiving helps support a healthy start to pregnancy. During Pregnancy : In the second and third trimesters, iron infusions are considered a safe and effective option when oral iron is not tolerated, is not working, or faster correction is needed [7, 8]. IV iron is not recommended in the first trimester [8]. Postpartum : Women can lose additional iron during delivery, and iron infusions can also be an option after delivery to support recovery [7]. ## Infusions vs. Oral Iron Many people struggle with iron supplements due to side effects like constipation and indigestion, and oral iron often needs to be taken for several months to rebuild iron stores. Infusions can be a faster option for people who cannot tolerate or do not respond to oral iron; depending on the product and the size of the iron deficit, one or more sessions may be needed [4, 5, 7]. ## Process and Safety To receive an iron infusion, a doctor's referral with recent ferritin results is necessary. The process involves: Initial Visit : Includes a full hematology panel. Infusion Types : - Monoferric : Used for non-pregnant women - Venofer : Used for pregnant women in the second and third trimesters; usually given as a series of smaller doses [5] Duration : The first infusion visit may take up to 90 minutes; if more than one infusion is needed, later visits are usually quicker. Iron infusions are generally safe, with common side effects including headache, muscle cramping, joint ache, metallic taste, nausea, dizziness, and low blood pressure. Many people have no side effects at all. ## Conclusion Iron infusions can be an effective option for addressing iron deficiency more quickly, especially for those who do not tolerate or respond to oral iron [7]. This blog post will explore the benefits of functional medicine in BC, highlighting the unique services and expertise of naturopathic physicians in the province. Discover how functional medicine may help you improve your health and well-being. ## What is Functional Medicine? Functional medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of your health concerns. Unlike conventional medicine, which often treats symptoms, functional medicine seeks to understand the underlying factors that contribute to your overall health and well-being. It considers all aspects of your health, including nutrition, lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors. Naturopathic physicians like Dr. Lucas MacMillan at the Delbrook Integrative Medical Centre offer functional assessments and treatments, alongside conventional ones. ## Why Choose Functional Medicine? Here are some key benefits of choosing functional medicine: - Personalized Care: Functional medicine practitioners take the time to understand your individual needs and develop a tailored treatment plan that is right for you. - Root Cause Identification: By addressing the underlying causes of your health concerns, functional medicine aims to help you work toward lasting results. - Holistic Approach: Functional medicine considers all aspects of your health, not just isolated symptoms. - Preventative Care: Functional medicine promotes proactive measures to reduce the risk of future health problems. - Long-Term Wellness: Functional medicine aims for sustainable health improvements and optimal well-being. ## Services Offered by Naturopathic Physicians Naturopathic physicians in BC are licensed healthcare providers who offer a wide range of services, including: - Comprehensive Health Assessments: In-depth analysis of your health history, lifestyle, and current health concerns. - Nutritional Counseling: Personalized dietary recommendations to optimize your health and address specific needs. - Lifestyle Modification Guidance: Strategies for managing stress, improving sleep, and increasing physical activity. - Botanical Medicine: Use of herbs and other natural remedies to support overall health and address specific conditions. - Supplementation: Personalized recommendations for high-quality supplements to address nutritional deficiencies or target specific health goals. - Prescription Medication: Naturopathic physicians in BC are licensed to prescribe or change medications when necessary. - Laboratory Testing: Ordering and interpretation of blood work and various other lab tests to assess your health status. ## Common Health Concerns Addressed by Functional Medicine Functional medicine can help address a wide range of health concerns, including: - Metabolic Concerns: Blood sugar imbalances, cholesterol levels, and fatty liver disease. - Lower Energy Levels: Chronic fatigue, low motivation, and difficulty concentrating. - Digestive Concerns: Gas, bloating, constipation, loose stools, straining, and irregular bowel frequency. - Pain: Injuries, arthritis, sprains, strains, and repetitive stress injuries. - Immune Concerns: Autoimmunity, chronic fatigue, and food reactivities. - Hormone Related Concerns: Hot flushes, vaginal dryness, pain with intercourse, wandering joint pains, and mood swings. ## Why Choose a Naturopathic Physician in BC? We make plans that are realistic, and understand that some approaches that work for others may not work for you. ## Common Misconceptions About Functional Medicine There are many misconceptions about functional medicine. Here are a few common ones: - Naturopathic physicians can't prescribe medications: This is false. Naturopathic physicians in BC are fully licensed healthcare providers and can prescribe medications when necessary. - Functional medicine is only about supplements and herbs: While supplements and herbs can play a role in functional medicine, they are just one part of a comprehensive approach that includes lifestyle modifications, nutrition, and other therapies. - Functional medicine is not evidence-based: Our approach draws on scientific evidence wherever it is available and uses evidence-informed therapies. In places where sufficient evidence does not exist, we use our experience and understanding of the body to create the plan that is most likely to help, and set metrics to measure success. All therapies are tracked and monitored, with adjustments made when needed to dial it in for you. ### Book an Appointment Today If you're ready to take a personalized and holistic approach to your health, give us a call at [604-986-9191](tel:604-986-9191) or book online at [delbrook.janeapp.com](http://delbrook.janeapp.com/). A counsellor grounded in curiosity, attunement, and nervous system safety — now a Certified IFS Therapist, drawing on her own journey through injury and burnout. ## How I Work My work draws on a few evidence-based approaches, each suited to different parts of what you're carrying — or building. Internal Family Systems (IFS) — I'm a Certified IFS Therapist, which means working with the different parts of you — including the ones that formed to protect you from pain — with curiosity instead of judgment. Pain Reprocessing Therapy — For chronic pain that has outlasted the original injury, this helps retrain how your brain interprets pain signals, so your body can unlearn a threat response that's no longer serving it. EMDR — For processing stored trauma, physical or emotional, that keeps your nervous system stuck on high alert. CBT & somatic approaches — Practical tools for the thought patterns and body sensations that come with prolonged stress, physical limitation, or the pressure of performing at a high level. This isn't only about fixing what's broken. A regulated nervous system is also what lets you build on a solid foundation — whether that's returning to sport stronger, leading under pressure without burning out, or trusting your body again after injury. ## Who I Work With You might find our work useful if you're: - Living with chronic pain that hasn't responded to rest or treatment alone - An injured or sidelined athlete — especially an endurance athlete — navigating the identity loss of forced downtime, or working to return stronger than before - A high-performer or high-stress professional looking to build resilience and sustain performance, not just recover from burnout - Carrying complex or relational trauma and looking for a trauma-informed, collaborative space Wherever you're starting from — crisis, plateau, or peak — we'll go at a pace your nervous system can actually work with. ## Specialties - Internal Family Systems (IFS Certified Therapist) - EMDR - Pain Reprocessing Therapy - Chronic pain - Burnout - Athletic identity & injury recovery Booking: https://delbrook.janeapp.com/ --- title: "Peter Maharajh" entity: "team" canonical_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/team/peter-maharajh" markdown_url: "https://www.delbrookintegrative.com/llms/team/peter-maharajh" lastmod: "2026-07-20T14:38:35.625Z" --- # Peter Maharajh Role: Registered Massage Therapist Credentials: RMT Registered Massage Therapist treating everything from elite sports injuries to chronic pain.
