Sitz Bath Guide

By Dr. Lucas MacMillan, ND7/16/2026

What is a Sitz Bath?

A sitz bath is a warm, shallow bath that covers the hips and buttocks. It can help relieve discomfort from various conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or after childbirth.

Benefits of a Sitz Bath

  • Soothes discomfort: Provides relief from pain and irritation.
  • Promotes healing: Encourages blood flow to the area, aiding in recovery.
  • Cleanses: Helps to keep the area clean and free from infection.

How to Prepare a Sitz Bath

Gather Supplies:

  • A sitz bath basin (or a clean bathtub)
  • Warm water (not hot)
  • Optional: Epsom salt or baking soda (if recommended by your healthcare provider)

Fill the Basin:

  • Fill the sitz bath basin with enough warm water to cover your hips and buttocks.
  • If using, add Epsom salt or baking soda as directed.

Test the Temperature:

  • Ensure the water is warm but not too hot to avoid burns.

How to Use a Sitz Bath

Position Yourself:

  • Sit in the bath for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Make sure your hips and buttocks are fully submerged.

Relax:

  • Take deep breaths and try to relax during the bath.

Dry Off:

  • After the bath, gently pat the area dry with a clean towel.
  • Avoid rubbing the area to prevent irritation.

Frequency of Use

It is generally recommended to take a sitz bath 1-4 times a day or as advised by your healthcare provider.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure the area is clean before and after the sitz bath.
  • If you experience increased pain or discomfort, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid using any harsh soaps or products in the bath.
  • If you notice any signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, or discharge), seek further medical advice.
  • If this is the right treatment for you, you will generally see improvements in symptoms within a few days or a week of treatment. You can continue as long as it is helpful.
